Video message for the UN inter-agency staff event to mark Pride Month “Promoting LGBTIQ+ inclusion across the UN”

This Pride Month and always, we are proud of the courage, creativity, and contributions of our LGBTIQ+ colleagues around the world.

Your perspectives are part of the UN's DNA – they are crucial to keep us relevant, resilient, and innovative.

Your experiences help us deliver better for those who are pushed to the margins for all kinds of reasons.

I pay tribute to all the LGBTIQ+ colleagues who work for the United Nations. I am aware that some of you have to serve in places where you cannot express yourselves safely or be with the person you love.

Please know that I stand with you in solidarity.

I know these are not easy times for LGBTIQ+ people and those who advocate for their rights. We’re seeing a sweeping backlash against gender equality, sexual orientation, and gender identity, and deep funding cuts are putting programmes under immense strain.

My Office is proud to work with partners across the UN system so we can lead by example and create workplaces where everyone can thrive.

Our UN-wide Free and Equal campaign reaches millions with stories and messages that celebrate the colours of our shared humanity. Hundreds of colleagues have taken our courses on the human rights of LGBTIQ+ people.

Two weeks ago, we launched the Global Alliance for Human Rights. I invite LGBTIQ+ communities – within and outside the UN – to join it, and to bring your courage and the leadership you have always brought to the human rights movement.

Diversity is our strength; it’s our richness; and it’s what will carry us forward.

Happy Pride Month.
