Statement by Ambassador Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, President of the United Nations Human Rights Council, on the Award of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay

14 October 2026

I join the United Nations Secretary-General and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in warmly congratulating Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on receiving the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to advance peace and international law.

I recognize Ms. Pillay’s dedication and service to the cause of human rights and justice in many capacities.

As UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2008–2014) and as Chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel (2021–2025), established by the Human Rights Council, she brought to these roles the independence, judicial rigour and principle that have defined her career.

The Nobel Peace Prize fittingly recognizes her exceptional contribution to human rights and her steadfast pursuit of justice, accountability and peace. I extend my heartfelt congratulations on this richly deserved honour.
