OHCHR and Sport
About Sport and Human Rights
Everyone has the right to participate in sport, rest and leisure, and recreational activities without discrimination. These rights are reflected in core international human rights instruments. They include the rights to equality and non-discrimination, privacy, freedom of expression and association, among others. Everyone should be able to participate in sport in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment, free from violence, harassment, and abuse. Victims have a right to access justice and effective remedies.
Human rights concerns also arise during sporting events, affecting athletes, workers and local communities. Despite human rights progress in sport, more efforts are needed to ensure everyone’s rights are fully respected and protected in sports contexts.
Our work on Sport
OHCHR collaborates with governments, sports organizations, civil society, athletes, and private sector partners to advance and safeguard human rights in and through sport. Drawing on thematic expertise and strategic partnerships, OHCHR promotes inclusive and rights-based sporting environments by providing education, capacity-building, public awareness initiatives, policy dialogue, and advocacy. Its work also supports the creation and implementation of action plans, standards, and practical guidance to ensure that sporting institutions, activities, and major sporting events operate in accordance with international human rights standards, while using sport as a catalyst for broader social and human rights change.
