Article 34
Committee on Enforced Disappearances
Mexico
In accordance with article 34 of the Convention, “If the Committee receives information which appears to it to contain well-founded indications that enforced disappearance is being practised on a widespread or systematic basis in the territory under the jurisdiction of a State Party, it may, after seeking from the State Party concerned all relevant information on the situation, urgently bring the matter to the attention of the General Assembly of the United Nations, through the Secretary-General of the United Nations.”
From February to May 2025, the Committee received information from civil society organizations and victims’ groups suggesting that the situation related to disappearances, including enforced disappearances in Mexico, is sufficiently serious to merit action by the Committee under article 34. These submissions were followed by various others supporting this request.
During its twenty-eighth session in March 2025, the Committee examined the information received in the light of all the information made available since 2012 under the different mandated procedures of the Convention. It requested the State Party to provide all relevant information on the situation by 18 September 2025.
Following analysis of the reply submitted by the State Party during its twenty-ninth and thirtieth sessions in September 2025 and March 2026, respectively, the Committee decided to bring the situation in Mexico as a matter of urgency to the attention of the United Nations General Assembly.
The decision of the Committee and all the information taken into account under the article 34 procedure can be consulted below:
